Webinar Q&A: Amazon Marketplace for Ecommerce Merchants

During yesterday’s webinar “Getting Started with Amazon Marketplace”, the springbots, Joe Reger and Michael Isaacs presented invaluable information for merchants who are looking to sell their store’s products on Amazon. After the webinar, questions rolled in about listing products, syncing inventory, and using Springbot’s Amazon Essential integration, so we compiled the questions and answers into a post.

Question 1: Do you recommend selling high end brands on Amazon? Or is it mainly for discount/sale items?

It’s the perfect time for high end brands to use Amazon! Ten years ago, Amazon was known as a place to find the lowest prices, but they are making a big push to become the “everything store.” They are currently featuring many high end brands in curated collections on product category homepages in an effort to attract and recruit similar high end brands to start selling on Amazon.

Since this is one of Amazon’s fastest growing segments, this is the perfect time for luxury brands to start selling. Compared to other segments in Amazon, the high end segment is relatively untouched which essentially means that there is a huge amount of untapped opportunity. And as Amazon’s history shows, being the first to the market is the key to being successful in the Amazon Marketplace.

Question 2: Do we (customers) use Amazon Essential in lieu of going directly to Amazon via an API feed?

Yes. Springbot has done the integration work to match products, sync inventory, and import orders to and from Amazon. While we certainly don’t cover all of the Amazon API, we do cover some of the most important parts of it.

Question 3: If we’re using Magento, can we see that the order came from Amazon?

You can! In Magento, the Amazon orders are tagged when imported and can also be identified by their unique Amazon domain. In Shopify, we use a tag that tells the store owner it’s a “Springbot Amazon” order. Then, the order name is the Amazon Order ID. This simplifies the process and makes reporting easy to understand.

Question 4: Can you use Springbot to publish items onto Amazon but then not go through Springbot to process orders?

For sure. Although Springbot’s Amazon Essential feature gives you the ability to publish, import, and sync orders and inventory, you are not required to use all three functions. You can pick and choose to use one or all of the features. It’s all about convenience and what works best for your situation.

Question 5: How can I get more control over my product listings on Amazon?

If you can, utilize Brand Registry to gain control over your product listings from the very beginning. This is a tool that a lot of our customers who manufacture their own products use. It helps to control and protect their brand in the event that their retail partners are selling their products already.

Question 6: How long does it take to get started on Amazon if I am brand new to the Marketplace?

This really depends on 1) the number of products you are planning to list, 2) if you are able to match your products to preexisting products on Amazon, and 3) if you have to create new listings for every product. If you have the option to match your products to other existing products on Amazon, this process will be a lot faster. If you have to create a brand new listing for all of your products, this will take more time.

Think of it this way: When you first launch a store, you have to list all of your products one by one, but they generate revenue on a recurring basis. Similarly, you have to list your products on Amazon and they generate revenue on a recurring basis as well. For Amazon, however, it’s easier since you can use a tool like Springbot to match and sync products so that you don’t have to create every product listing individually. Although creating a new listing for each of your products will initially take more time, it pays off in the long run. As the first person to list the product on Amazon, you will have more control of the listing and a better chance of winning the Buy Box.

Question 7: Once I list my products on Amazon, when should I start to see sales?

This really depends on the types of products you are selling and what kind of competition you have on Amazon. If you are selling a unique and highly sought-after product, then sales might come sooner rather than later. But if you are selling a product that is commonly sold on Amazon, it may take some time to optimize your listings to win the Buy Box and generate sales.

Of course, even if you are just beginning to sell your products on Amazon, you still have the opportunity to win the Buy Box by being competitive in your pricing strategy as well as maintaining a strong seller rating in terms of your inventory and shipping performance.

Question 8: Is the Amazon Essential Integration included in all Springbot dashboards?

The Springbot Amazon Essential Feature is included in the Pro and Pro Plus packages and can be added onto the Starter Package for $99 additional monthly cost.
